Evelyn Amsler asked a question
My brother died in April 2016 without a will. He was a resident of Chicago IL. He had a life partner but they were not married. He stored three motorcycles at the home of a friend in New Mexico. None of us--his partner, his friend, nor I--has the vehicle titles and we do not know where they might be. The friend is selling his house and is anxious to get the motorcycles off his property. None of us has any interest in the motorcycles except that, if they could be sold, any money from such sale should go to his partner.
I am aware this property could go through probate in Chicago, but my brother had debts that exceeded the value of any property he had. Plus, I live in Western New York and have neither the time nor the money for trips to Chicago to pursue probate.
QUESTIONS::
(1) Are the motorcycles considered abandoned?
(2) Is there any way his friend in New Mexico (who is still storing the motorcycles) can legally claim them as abandoned and either sell them or otherwise dispose of them?
